Student Welfare & Wellbeing

Safeguarding is of paramount importance to us and we endeavour to keep our students safe at all times. We have a dedicated Child Protection team that comprises of the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) and a team of deputies.

Our DSL is Mr S Devshi and he can be contacted by email on sdevshi@hwga.org.uk. You can also call him on 0121 554 8122.

There is also a strong Student Welfare Team who are always available for young people and families for advice and support.  Please contact the academy if you need any support for your daughter.

The Student Welfare Team are always available for children and young people to talk to about any worries or concerns that they may have.

The Student Welfare Team are: –

  • Form Tutors
  • Heads of Year
  • Attendance Officer
  • Assistant Headteacher – Behaviour and Safeguarding
  • Assistant Headteacher – Inclusion (SEND)

Young people can also access the visiting councillors through the Student Welfare Team.

The academy employs two part-time student counsellors from the following agencies: –

  • Tappy Twins
  • Change Brief Therapy

They work with students for a variety of reasons, including anxiety, stress, anger, self-harm and self-esteem issues.  Students are sometimes referred by the Student Welfare Team or students can also self-refer.  They both have had a positive and marked impact on many of these students.

We are in our third year of work with the New Start Programme which is run by Birmingham Education Partners (BEP). This is a programme which helps support children and young people to develop personal and academic resilience.

There are several members of the Student Welfare staff who have passed First Aid in Mental Health and all academy staff have received several training sessions on aspects of mental health so that they can spot the signs and support or refer appropriately.
